Sara Boersma, Registered Social Worker (MSW)
MY PASSION
Having the opportunity to help others is what lights the fire in my soul. As a Registered Social Worker, it is my passion to help others recognize their own strengths and live life to their fullest potential, despite the challenges they may find themselves facing along the way.
Starting in my early teens, I struggled with several forms of anxiety that I buried and failed to discuss with others for fear of judgement. This only led me to avoid situational triggers and try to Band-Aid my problems rather than learn how to work through them.
Once I started processing my anxiety, and talking to others with similar struggles, I was able to grow in ways I never thought possible. This has sparked my passion in supporting people through their mental health journeys and becoming an advocate in eliminating the stigma associated with seeking help.
WHO I WORK WITH
I’m passionate about working with clients of all ages and genders and have a particular interest in working with women and female youth. Ever since I was little and participating in anything sports-related, I felt passionate in advocating for women and girls and the incredible strength, talent and resiliency they hold.
Many females encounter experiences and relationships that reduce their self-esteem and cause them to feel inferior to others. This can lead to further challenges including unhealthy coping strategies, isolation, and a cycle of unhealthy relationships, to name a few. It is my honour to help clients gain back their voice, recognize their worth, and use their newfound confidence to reach their goals.
MY APPROACH
I recognize how challenging seeking counselling support can be and am very intentional in making the space a comfortable and safe environment. I work through a trauma-informed lens and use a conversational approach to help make the heavy stuff a little easier to discuss.
I utilize aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), combined with Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help clients learn how to identify and cope with their emotions and challenge their unhelpful thoughts.
I recognize the impact in a compassionate heart, a listening ear, and having a community of supporters. I would love to be a part of your healing journey and help you create a treatment plan specific to you.
